Statement of Unity of Nashville Taskforce on Social Action and social Justice October, 2022

This is a statement of intent as well as an open invitation to join an ongoing conversation about racial and social injustice in our community, nation, and world. It is meant to stimulate honest discussion and heartfelt action.

Events of the past few years in the United States and around the world have reminded us that systems of violent repression, injustice, and inequality aimed at people of color, indigenous groups, and persons of varied gender identities continue to be deeply embedded in our social structures and institutions.

Unity of Nashville gathers as a community of faith to nurture spiritual growth and support each other to live by our values. Consistent with the fifth Unity Principle, “Through thoughts, words, and actions, we live the Truth we know,” Unity of Nashville celebrates diversity and stands for equality and justice for all people.

We seek to address and end injustice and oppression by promoting greater awareness and understanding and by taking positive, non-violent actions to dismantle systemic racism and the structures that support it.

The undersigned hereby commit to doing so peacefully, speaking truth to power, and acting on our beliefs (the fifth principle). We pledge to do so with compassion and courage, while not turning away from discomfort, anxiety, or potential conflict.

We commit to this statement in the spirit of love and peace. We invite others to join us in raising awareness and doing the hard work of reconciliation for past and current injustices so that all persons can be lifted to their highest and most perfect being.

Thank you to our Board President Janine Lanier, Robin Gordon and Wendy Behr with our Social Justice Action Team, and our community for volunteering!

Our SJAT has partnered with Janine and her efforts with “More Than Six” to prepare “Gigi’s Fuel Packs” for their Fall action project! You can see more information on these in the images above.

Last Sunday during fellowship we packed up tons of bags with basic hygiene products and non perishable items. This Sunday after service you will have an opportunity to pick up the bags and keep them in your car to distribute to people in our area experiencing homlessness.

This was an amazing effort and we look forward to continuing this project monthly through the fall and winter months. Please see our list above for donations needed, and as always any monetary donation is accepted and appreciated. We will continue taking donations each Sunday in Fellowship Hall, we will pack after service on the second Sunday of the month!

January 14, 2024

Today was an incredible and uplifting day as we came together with our community to pack 70 Gigi's Fuel Packs in support of those experiencing homelessness. In the spirit of Unity and in honor of MLK Jr., we embraced our daily word for today, 'Serve.' A heartfelt thank you to everyone who generously donated supplies and their time to packing.

Next Sunday, you can pick up packs in the Peace Place room after service. During that time, the Social Justice Action Committee will host its monthly meeting, and all are invited to join in supporting our Unity action efforts in 2024.

Our next packing session is scheduled for Sunday, July 21, and we'll need additional donations to make it happen. While you're welcome to shop anywhere, we've created an Amazon Wishlist for your convenience, which ships directly to Unity of Nashville! Outside donations can be dropped off in Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to making a positive impact in our community.
