FAQs LEADERSHIP
What is the role of a Trustee?
Members of the Board of Trustees are responsible for the governance and supervision of the affairs of the church, with a particular focus on policy development and oversight.
How are prospective trustees and officers nominated?
Anyone who has been an Active Member, for one year or more at Unity of Nashville, may apply for an open trustee position. The Nominating Committee will review all applications and will contact interested candidates to schedule an interview on the ZOOM platform. The Nominating Committee will recommend at least one (1) nominee for each available opening to the congregation prior to the annual meeting each May.
FAQs ABOUT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
What are the responsibilities of a Trustees?
Under Unity of Nashville’s governance system, called “policy governance framework", Trustees stay in conversation with the congregation and have these main functions:
1) to set broad governing policy; and
2) to monitor the church’s progress toward its goals/vision statements. The Board of Trustees is not an implementation body and does not engage in the church’s day-to-day management. Board members participate in and support church committees.
How long is a Trustee’s term?
Each Trustee serves for three (3) years. The terms are staggered so that at least two (2) trustees cycle off and on each year.
How often does the Board meet and what is the typical workload?
The Board meets monthly and usually has an annual weekend retreat. Occasionally, special meetings are called to address specific issues. Between meetings, trustees should expect to review materials and do research. The average workload is about 15 hours per month. The Board president and vice president, who are elected by the other trustees, may have a larger workload.
FAQs FOR OFFICERS
What are the responsibilities of the Officers of the Board?
Officers are elected by the Board.
The church's bylaws set out the offices and their responsibilities:
The Secretary keeps minutes of the Board meetings; preserves an account of whatever may be of interest in the history of the church; records and ensures the accessibility of all church policies; is responsible for the official roll of church membership; determines membership status as directed in the bylaws; maintains an official list of members entitled to vote in church elections.
The Treasurer monitors the church’s funds; assures safekeeping of the books and records of all financial transactions; performs other duties customary to the office; attends Board meetings.
The President presides at the church’s annual and special meetings; is responsible for preparing meetings and for assuring that proceedings are conducted fairly and in accordance with the church’s bylaws; presides over regular Board meetings, and creates ad hoc committees to address specific needs.
The Vice President presides in the absence of the President, is ex officio to all committees and assumes special tasks and/or chairs committees as needed.
How long are terms for the church officers?
Officers generally serve for one year. They may choose to continue to serve up to three consecutive years.
